Ear wax and tiny hairs in the ear canal catch dust, bacteria, and other small particles, preventing them from getting further into the ear and damaging deeper structures, such as the eardrum. Problems can occur when ear wax builds up and becomes impacted. This can obstruct the ear canal, affecting one's hearing. A buildup of too much earwax can even cause tinnitus.
Although it is extremely tempting to use a cotton bud or some other object to insert into your ear, especially if it is itchy, we strongly advise against it. Sensitive structures such as the eardrum can be permanently damaged by the insertion of foreign objects. Ear wax and dead skin sometimes naturally migrates out of the ear canal but often a build up of earwax needs clinical removal using quick painless micro-suction. This is a procedure that can be done in our clinic in about 15 minutes, and it can make all the difference to your hearing and ear health.
Foreign Bodies in the Ear
For example insects, earrings, food particles, and the tips of cotton buds are some of the things that are sometimes discovered in patients' ears. If left in the ear canal, foreign objects can cause irritation, infection, bleeding, and in worst cases, hearing loss - so they must be dealt with quickly.

Modern and Safe Microsuction

Traditional ear syringing uses high pressure water to flush out blockages in the ear and is now strongly discouraged. There is no guarantee that the blockage will be removed, and there are other inherent risks too. Micro-Suction is a safe, comfortable and pain-free technique that involves the use of a binocular microscope to get a clear view inside the ear canal, and fine low pressure suction, to safely remove debris and blockages. Micro-Suction also allows us to examine the patient's ear structure in detail, for signs of damage or infection.
